SO . . . WHAT HAVE I BEEN UP TO?
UPDATE ON BOOK 2 THE COUSINS O’CONNOR SERIES!
 O’CONNOR CHRISTMAS NOVELLA?
COVER REVEAL FOR MY FIRST ROMANTIC MYSTERY/SUSPENSE!
đ So … What Have I Been Up To?
Well . . . a whole lot, except not much of it’s related to writing! đł
Hello, everyone . . . it’s been a while since we’ve chatted, so I wanted to fill you in on what I’ve been up to in 2021. For me, it’s been a quiet year so far because I’ve been on a six-month sabbatical of sorts where I laid my writing aside to focus primarily on God and family. I think we need to do that every so often, and the last time I did that was the spring of 2015 when I wrote Isle of Hope.
As a result, not only have I had the joy of drawing closer to God this year, but the joy of reveling in family without distraction as well, something this writer needs to do more often than she does. That said . . . here’s just a sneak peek at some of the things I’ve been up to!
Gardening with my pots, playing in fountains with my daughter and grandson, playing cards (Go Fish!) with my granddaughters, and taking walks with Wy . . .
 Â
Â

Hanging out with Mrs. Edison and Keith and painting my granddaughters’ nails . . .

Coving out with my son & grands and attending wedding with the love of my life . . .

Â
Watching funny cat videos with grands and caring for my hubby after knee surgery . . .

And getting a (MOST wonderful) shock when my pregnant daughter surprises me with a Mother’s Day pic indicating that the 2nd boy she was supposed to have was actually a girl (see the blonde pigtails on the right side of Keith and I???) because the test was wrong â WHOO-HOO!

Soooooo . . . even though I haven’t been writing, it’s been a wonderful 2021 so far for me, and I hope for you too! And you know what? I am expecting it to get even better and better for us all . . .
Update on Book 2 of The Cousins O’Connor Series!
Okay, I will admit I got a real late start on writing Hope’s story this year, A Hope and a Prayer, not tackling it till almost six months into the year.
BUT . . . I do have it about 1/4 of the way done and hope to jump back in soon, shooting for a pre-Christmas release date. So prayers appreciated that I can get ‘er done! And since I always like to give you a little something to read, here are the opening paragraphs to the prologue of A Hope and a Prayer:
Prologue, 2d General Hospital, Nancy, France, January 2, 1945
âSo help me, OâNeill, Iâll throttle you if you die!â The irony of her rare hiss of a whisper was lost on Nurse Hope Dennehy as she hovered near Lieutenant Bren OâNeill in the dimly lit surgical recovery ward. Breathing in the pungent scent of disinfectant, she sat glued to the edge of her wooden chair in the wee hours of the morning. His handsome face was as pale as the sheet draped across his heavily bandaged body while she gently grazed a thumb over the gauze on his arm, near as comatose as her best friend in the bed.
Her best friend.
Tears burned along with the fatigue in her eyes. A dear, dear friendship that had slowly evolved when her cousin Gabe â the woman Bren had hoped to marry â broke off her relationship with him after she returned to the States. Still recuperating from a near-fatal sniper gunshot during the Liberation of Paris, Bren had been devastated at the time, sinking into a depression that had worried Hope sick. And so she did what she always did when someone she cared about was hurting â she tried to alleviate their pain. A sympathetic ear, a shoulder to cry on, a gin rummy game or two during free time ⊠and prayer.
Lots and lots of prayer.
To heal Brenâs heart, yes.
Her heart skipped a fractured beat. And to safeguard hers.
Ah, yes, romance is definitely in the air for our sweet Hope Dennehy, no matter how hard she tries to avoid it, so stay tuned for more sneak peeks soon . . .
đł O’Connor Christmas Novella?
Well, please forgive me, but unfortunately, there won’t be one this year because of the time off I took, so Steven & Annie and Gabe & Alex are just going to have to wait till next year for their Christmas debut.
But that’s okay because who knows? Maybe I’ll just go ahead and do two next year! Then I can publish ALL of the stories in one Christmas anthology with a final Marcy and Patrick Christmas story the next year, in both e-book and print of course, ahead of my original schedule! đ
Cover Reveal for my First Romantic Mystery/Suspense!
And now â FINALLY â here’s the moment I’ve been waiting for (and hopefully you too!), the debut of my very first romantic mystery/suspense, scheduled for release on SEPTEMBER 20, 2021!
As promised, it is 50% romance and 50% mystery unlike most romantic suspense novels (which are 20% romance and 80% suspense) because frankly, as a die-hard romance queen, I just couldn’t do it any other way! I’m pretty sure that most staunch romantic suspense readers won’t like that as much, but hopefully my diehard romance readers will. So check out the cover and jacket blurb below, and if it looks good to you, I encourage you to pre-order it at a discounted rate that will go up on Sept. 20!

Sheâs sweet & cozy mysteries. Heâs fun & cozy flings.
Till a deadly secret reveals not-so-cozy things.
Twenty-six-year-old Molly Stewart â ex-Navy nurse and former evidence technician for the Charleston Police Department â has been burned by love. So when her friend, Pastor Chase Griffin, begs her to move to scenic Lake Loon to be a nurse and companion for Miss Lilly, his elderly landlady, she jumps at the chance. The secluded and cozy cottage on a clear mountain lake seems the perfect place to heal from her fiancĂ©âs betrayal as well as indulge in one of her greatest passions â cozy romance. First with reading them by the bookcase and then hopefully, if dreams come true, solving them one day as a licensed detective. But when Miss Lillyâs estranged great nephew shows up, itâs no mystery as to why he and Molly butt heads. Because it only takes one stolen kiss â while sheâs sleeping, no less â to discover heâs an even bigger player than the fiancĂ© who broke her heart.
When international playboy and Irish soccer star Brec McGill learns his long-lost great aunt is in a coma from a drowning accident, he rushes to her side. Not only is he anxious to reconnect with his only living relative he spent summers with as a boy, but her cottage on Lake Loon, Georgia is the perfect respite to heal from game injuries and escape a tabloid scandal. At thirty-three heâs disillusioned with the game, his fiancĂ©e, and life in general, craving nothing but a little peace and solitude to get his head on straight. But when he discovers his auntâs cottage is not only inhabited by a crusty Aunt Lilly he hasnât seen in ten years, but a pretty prude of a nurse as well, his plans take a nose-dive in the lake. Because suddenly it appears not only was Aunt Lillyâs accident no accident . . . but somebody out there wants to see them all dead.
WELL . . . that’s all I have for you today, but I hope to get back with you on sneak peeks soon, so stay tuned! And have a BLESSED rest of your summer! đ
Hugs!

đ Â Â Excerpt from “The Secret of Emerald Cottage”!
Chapter Two
Wiping steam off the mirror with a towel, Brec assessed his image, amazed at just how much betterâand invigoratedâhe felt after a shower. His lips tipped into a lazy smile as he rubbed the two-day-old scruff on his face.
Of course kissing a gorgeous Yank sure didnât hurt.
In his bed, no less.
His smile faded. Without him, thank God.
He stared at the man in the mirror, the one who had just screwed up everything in his life and knew that the last thing he wantedâor neededâwas more of the same. One lousy mistake, thatâs all it had taken, and heâd botched it all.
His engagement.
His career.
His life.
His eyelids shuttered closed as he kneaded his temple. He had no business hitting on anyone right now, even if Sleeping Beauty had muttered the request in her sleep.
âKiss me, please.â
So he had. Because kissing women was second nature to him, after all. The Achilles heel that had finally taken him down, destroying everything heâd worked so hard to obtain.
In one swoop of a sorry scandal.
Lashes lifting, he studied what some called one of the best forwards in League of Ireland soccer and knew coming back to the Statesâthe home country he had abandonedâwas the right thing to do. His gut tightened. If one could even consider it a home. He certainly hadnât, not since the age of eighteen, when his mom and dad had scissored his life in a divorce that hadnât just been messy; itâd gone all the way to bloody.
âProvidential,â his agent had called Aunt Lillyâs fall, urging him to go stay with his aunt in her time of need. He buried a grunt as his gaze roamed from a torso carefully sculpted by hours in the gym to what his ex-fiancee liked to call his âMichelanglo face,â tightly chiseled features and beautiful form, she would say, with a body like a Greek god.
The grunt escaped as he raked a hand through ebony curls damp from the shower. More like his time of need, he thought as he stripped off the towel and proceeded to get dressed, concurring that the timing of Miss Lillyâs accident was, indeed, providential.
âItâll do you good to go home to your Aunt Lilly,â Morty had insisted, âuntil everything blows over.â
Everything. He donned a clean T-shirt with a clamp of his jaw.
His life.
His fiancee. He waited for the ache to come at the loss of his trophy girlfriend, but all he felt was guilt as he slipped into fresh jeans, wishing he could slip into a fresh life as easily. He regretted the pain heâd caused Lana, but it was for the best. What up-and-coming Italian movie starlet wanted to be saddled with a wayward sports celebrity whose career was effectively over for the rest of the year? He grunted. And maybe longer.
Casting a final glance into the mirror, he zipped up, hoping and prayingâdear God, did he even still do that?âthat Aunt Lillyâs âhomeâ truly would âdo him good.â
Home. Or at least more of one than heâd ever had before.
Padding down the hardwood hallway, he silently slipped down the stairs into the kitchen where Goldilocks was âwhipping upâ breakfast while she sang the lyrics toâand badlyâsomething that sounded like âGodâs not deadâ blaring from her phone. He blinked when he saw her take two Jimmy Dean biscuits from a box and slip into the microwave, hips and arms rolling in a distant rendition of the new dance craze, Say So.
Thatâs something nutritional?
Strolling up behind her by several feet, he cleared his throat, and she whirled around. One of the biscuits flew in the air, almost assaulting him while she gaped in apparent shock. âSon of a biscuit!â she shouted, making him smile over one of Aunt Lillyâs favoriteâand oddly appropriateââswear words.â If you can call it that, as she sagged against the counter with hand splayed to her chest. âDonât ever sneak up on me like that again! What, are you part Native American or something? I never even heard you coming.â
âNopeââhe lifted a footââjust an unshod Irishman drowned out by raucous singing. Or ⊠at least I think it was singing.â Grinning, he retrieved the biscuit from the floor and tossed it once in the air, catching it handily before giving it over. âAnd this is your idea of ânutritiousâ?â
Green eyes the color of Irish moss crisscrossing Miss Lillyâs patio pavers narrowed a hair, a nuance with which he was rapidly becoming familiar. âI said fast, hardy, and nutritious, bucko, so two out of threeâs not bad.â She flipped the biscuit in the air like he had, deftly catching it before chucking it into the microwave with a slant of a smile. âEspecially for some strike-out king who assaults women while theyâre sleeping.â
âFor your information, Sleeping Beauty, I never strike out.â He ambled over to the coffee pot with a cocky smile, lifting it to take a sniff before pouring a cup. âSecondly, you asked for it, lass, so I was only following orders. And thirdlyââtaking a sip of the coffee, he scrunched his nose in distasteââI hope and pray Jimmy Dean makes biscuits better than you brew a pot.â
Punching in the time for the microwave with no little force, she slapped her arms in familiar fold while that indomitable chin edged up, completely ignoring his dig. âAnd whatâs that supposed to meâthat âI asked for it?â Ohhhhh, wait!â Apparent comprehension came with a slow nod and an open-mouthed smile that quickly resorted to a sexy tug of her lip. âYou mean that given your reputation, Player Boy, any woman in a bed is asking for it, right?â
It was his turn to burn her with a lidded gaze as he leaned against the counter, legs crossed at the ankles. âNo, little Miss Sassy-mouth, I mean that you asked me to kiss you.â
Ding!
âI did no such thing!â she said with a stomp of her foot, jerking the microwave door open to hurl the biscuits onto plates before slamming it closed again. She clunked both on the table.
âYou most certainly did.â Strolling over, he sat down and reached for his plate, staring at the cellophaned biscuit with no little hesitation. âYou said, âkiss me, please,â so I did.â
âIn my sleep!â she shouted with sparks in her eyes,âwhile I was dreaming! Under the influence of cold medicine, I might add, which Iâd have to chug a whole bottle of before Iâd ever consider kissing a pompous player like you!â
He grinned. âThatâs quite a combustible temper you have there, lass, which doesnât bode well for our sharing a house, now does it?â
She blinked wide, as if suddenly realizing sheâd just nuked him along with the biscuits. âOh, I am so sorry,â she said with a hand to her mouth, slowly sinking into her chair while she punished that amazing lip with her teeth. âI donât usually act like this, truly, but I just got burned by a player, so I guess you bring out the worst in me since, wellââshe gave a sheepish shrugââyouâre a player too.â
âWas a player,â he emphasized with a rip of the cellophane, holding the biscuit up to study it with wary eyes. âIâve turned over a new leaf, so thatâs part of my past.â
âOh, really?â Removing her âbreakfastâ from the cellophane, she proceeded to slather what looked like strawberry jam beneath the top portion before pinning him with a flutter of lashes. âSince whenâlast night when I pulled a gun on you?â
âExactly.â Chuckling, he followed her lead and reached for the jam to dress his biscuit with some taste. âSo ⊠you actually know how to use that thing?â
Her shoulders bounced with an off-handed shrug as she bit into her biscuit. âUsed to be a nurse in the Navy.â
âAhhh, star of the sea. How appropriate.â He took a bite and chewed, thinking this wasnât half bad, although it hardly qualified as ânutritious.â âSo, thatâs why you were hired as a caretaker and companion.â
âExactly.â Her nose crinkled. âWhat do you mean, âstar of the seaâ?â
He smiled. âYour nameâMolly. Means star of the sea in Gaelic.â
She grunted, causing his smile to grow. âYeah, well it means âbitterâ in Hebrew, at least since Iâve been out of the Navy, so trust me, thatâs a wee bit more appropriate.â She tossed back a gulp of her coffee, and Brec winced, thinking it had to be burning all the way down, but she just dabbed at her mouth with her napkin and took another drink. âBeing Miss Lillyâs caretaker and companion is the best job Iâve ever had, so I have Chase to thank. After she sprained her ankle falling down the stepsââ
He almost choked on his biscuit, taking a quick glug of coffee like she had to clear his throat, but it just scalded all the way down. Kind of like her comment. âShe fell down the steps? When?â
âAbout two months ago, which is when Chaseââshe paused in a squintââyou know him, right? Miss Lillyâs self-appointed caretaker, the son she never had, who lives here at the lake and sees to her every need?â
Brec bit back a scowl, albeit not too successfully. âYeah, I know him,â he muttered, remembering all too well the kid who vacationed with his family at Lake Loon every year. Nice kid, but he got on Brecâs nerves when he saw how much Aunt Lilly fawned over him.
âWell, heâs my pastor and good friendâwe were Navy buddies because he was a SEAL, you knowââ
He bit into his biscuit too hard, nearly gouging his tongue. Yeah, I know that too.
ââso he asked me to move in with Miss Lilly to keep an eye on her while she was recuperating,â she continued with a tongue-swipe of jam off her lips. âWhich ended up being a win-win for everybody since Chase needed somebody to care for Miss Lilly, and I needed a place to live.â
He paused mid-chew, then swallowed hard. âYou needed a place to live?â
A smile fidgeted at the edge of her lips while she finished her biscuit. âMmm ⊠part Native American, part myna bird. Whoops!â She licked her fingers with a silly grin before she wiped her hands on her napkin. âSorryâwe called a truce of sorts, I think, so, strike that last tease, Striker Boy.â
âStriker Man,â he emphasized with a grind of his smile.
Jumping up, she snatched her plate and his with a sassy toss of a ponytail the color of corn silk, lobbing an impish grin over her shoulder. âTouchy, touchy. But then, I guess thatâs better than kissy, kissy.â
His smile went flat. âCute.â
Eyes squinted in thought, she put a finger to her chin. âLetâs see. Since you donât seem to like Striker Boy or Player Boy or Strike-Out Man, maybe we should settle on something less offensive in the interest of peace and harmony.â
His smile slid sideways. âI have a novel ideaâhow âbout good olâ Brec?â
She scrunched her nose. âNo, I donât think so. Not unless Iâm deadly serious, which most of the time Iâm not. No, nicknames are very important to me as a form of expression. For instance, if Iâm annoyed with you, I can always resort to Striker Boy, Player Boy or Strike-Out Man. But since weâll be living in the same house together and have to get along, I need something a little friendlier âŠâ She snapped her fingers. âI know, Iâll call you Beck.â
His brow wrinkled in confusion. âBeck?â
âSure, you know, after David Beckham, the famous soccer star who was once a player like you?â Her ponytail bounced as she turned on the water and reached for the sponge. âHe turned over a new leaf too, to be a family man, remember?â
Heat crawled up the back of his neck. Family Man. That was the last thing anybody could call him. Deflecting his unease with a quick glug of coffee, he quickly changed the subject. âSo why did you need a place to live?â
Her smile dimmed considerably as she washed both plates. âI just moved back to Savannah three months ago to live with my folksââshe paused to stare aimlessly for a moment with a dish in hand before she finished drying it and put it away with a heavy sighââ after a player broke my heart in Charleston,â she whispered, definite emphasis on âplayer.â âSo âŠââshe spun around with a firm heft of her jawââI quit my job, packed up, and headed home to lick my wounds at my folks. But my parents were driving me crazy, hovering over me like I was six instead of twenty-six, which is why Miss Lilly is a Godsend.â She lifted the coffeepot. âRefill?â
âMight as well,â he said, extending his mug while he glanced at his watch. âWeâve got two hours till kill before we can visit Aunt Lilly, so you can fill me in on all the gaps regarding what happened to her.â Taking a healthy swig of the sludge she poured, Brec winced while she placed the pot back on the burner, hoping her caretaking skills exceeded those in the kitchen. âBut if you donât mind,â he said, pushing his chair away from the table to rise, â Iâll brew us a fresh pot of coffeeââhe tossed a wink over his shoulder as he dumped both his mug and the pot of sludgeââbecause something tells me weâre going to need it.â
